TRUMP FIRES 50+ TOMAHAWK MISSILES AT SYRIA
Other people get alerts on their phones, one classmate quips; "Well, we're in Syria now." Followed by my professor's response, a very confident one, "Well, it won't take long."
The details would come out by the time I got home, a response to the chemical weapons used by Assad on his own people. This very act was what President Obama called his "red line" for intervention in Syria. He would back down from his red line and did not take his shot at Assad, something that even Secretary of State Clinton still regrets.
But that was in 2013, this is four years later, and John Kerry even said "we got 100 percent of the chemical weapons out." So there was some surprise to the news that Assad had used chemical weapons on his own people again, just last week. The Alt-Right went as far to say it was fake news, perpetrated to make Trump attack Syria. The Pentagon has confirmed the chemical attack as they were able to track the plane and attack and if you've watched the video, it's rough to see small children in such peril.
Everyone on the internet freaked out.
That Clinton article is interesting, she says, "I really believe we should have and still should take out his air fields and prevent him from being able to use them to bomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them." Now, Clinton is about as hawkish of a Democrat as there is, so it's not surprising she is for intervention, but you do have President Trump's opponent from the election in agreement with his decision. It kind of makes the internet freaking out a little less valid and made me wonder, if this wasn't the right thing to do.
When examined holistically, this wasn't us going to war with Syria, but rather a direct strike on the airbase responsible for the chemical attack. This was not an attack on Assad's headquarters to take him out and create an even more unstable state. The President often said during his campaign that he wanted to build safe zones in Syria, rather than bring refugees here. This attack is not in line with what Russia wants in Syria, the Russians have supported Assad in the battle against ISIS, while we have sided with the rebels.
The narrative that President Trump is a puppet for Vladimir Putin doesn't really hold up, at least from this attack. President Trump saw children under attack by the use of chemical weapons and did not question the children being Islamic, rather he fired a rain of missiles to tell Syria he wasn't having it.
I don't know if this attack was the right thing to do, but we've seen the pictures of Syrian children for a long time now and said "someone needs to do something." Well, tonight someone did something, so instead of rushing to say the orange man goofed again, maybe this was called for.
